Asal-usul dan pendidikan

Ayah Napoleon, Carlo Bounaparte adalah perwakilan Korsika di Kerajaan Louis XVI.

Napoleon Bonaparte adalah anak kedua dari tujuh bersaudara. Ia lahir di Casa Bounaparte, di kota Ajaccio, Korsika, pada tanggal 15 Agustus 1769, satu tahun setelah kepulauan tersebut diserahterimakan Republik Genova kepada Perancis.^[1] Ia lahir dengan nama Napoleone di Bounaparte, namun ia mengubah namanya menjadi Napoléon Bonaparte yang lebih berbau Perancis.^{[note 1]}
Keluarga Bounaparte adalah keluarga bangsawan yang berasal dari Italia, yang pindah ke Korsika di abad ke-16/^[3] Ayahnya, Nobile Carlo Bounaparte, seorang pengacara, pernah menjadi perwakilan korsika saat Louis XVI berkuasa di tahun 1777. Ibunya bernama Maria Letizia Ramolino. Ia memiliki seorang kakak, Joseph; dan 5 adik, yaitu Lucien, Elisa, Louis, Pauline, Caroline, dan Jérôme. Napoleon di baptis sebagai katolik beberapa hari sebelum ulang tahunnya yang kedua, tepatnya tanggal 21 Juli 1771 di Katerdal Ajaccio.^[4]

Ia menjadi siswa di Akademi Militer Brienne tahun 1779 pada usia 10 tahun, kecerdasannya membuat Napoleon lulus akademi di usia 15 tahun. Karier militernya menanjak pesat setelah dia berhasil menumpas kerusuhan yang dimotori kaum pendukung royalis dengan cara yang sangat mengejutkan: menembakkan meriam di kota Paris dari atas menara. Peristiwa itu terjadi tahun 1795 saat Napoleon berusia 26 tahun. Berbagai perang yang dimenangkannya diantaranya melawan Austria dan Prusia.

Pada masa kejayaannya, Napoleon Bonaparte menguasai hampir seluruh dataran Eropa baik dengan diplomasi maupun peperangan. Diantaranya adalah Belanda dengan diangkatnya adiknya Louis Napoleon,Spanyol dengan diangkatnya Joseph Napoleon, Swedia dengan diangkatnya Jenderal Bernadotte sebagai raja yang kemudian melakukan pengkhianatan, sebagian besar wilayah Italia yang direbut dari Austria dan Polandia dengan diangkatnya Joseph Poniatowski sebagai wali negara Polandia.

Menikahi seorang janda bernama Joséphine de Beauharnais, kehidupan perkawinan Napoleon penuh dengan ketidakpercayaan dan perselingkuhan diantaranya perselingkuhan Napoleon dengan gadis Polandia Maria Walewska sampai akhirnya Joséphine menjadi istri yang setia. Dalam organisasi militer, Napoleon mengenalkan istilah korps, yang terdiri atas kumpulan divisi. Pembentukan korps ini juga didukung oleh besarnya pendaftaran tentara yang mengakibatkan jumlah tentara menjadi membengkak, sehingga diperlukan suatu kesatuan tentara yang lebih besar dari divisi.

Namun tidak semua peperangan berhasil dimenangkannya. Kegagalan dalam menginvasi daratan Mesir yang akibatnya berhadapan dengan kekuatan Inggris, Mamluk dan Utsmani. Meski di daratan gurun, Napoleon sukses mengalahkan tentara gabungan Utsmani dan Mamluk dalam Pertempuran Piramida, tetapi beberapa hari kemudian armada Perancis dikalahkan oleh armada Inggris di bawah pimpinan Laksamana Horatio Nelson di Teluk Aboukir. Armada Horatio Nelson untuk kedua kalinya berhasil mengalahkan armada Perancis. Kali ini pada pertempuran laut di Trafalgar antara armada Perancis-Spanyol yang dipimpin oleh Admiral Villeneuve dengan armada Britania Raya yang dipimpin oleh Laksamana Nelson meskipun Nelson gugur dalam pertempuran ini (terkena tembakan sniper Perancis).
Kegagalan dalam menginvasi Rusia karena ketangguhan dan kecerdikan strategi Jenderal Mikhail Kutuzov dan Tsar Aleksandr I dalam menghadapi pasukan Perancis dengan memanfaatkan musim dingin Rusia yang dikenal mematikan serta pengkhianatan Raja Swedia, Jendral Bernadotte.
